‘The Conjuring’ Rockets to #1

Horror film The Conjuring has lived up to the buzz. It started off with 3.3M for Thursday late shows, which are counted in the impressive 16.3M Friday haul. The horror flick has actually managed to earn an A- cinemascore, rare for films of its genre, and should continue to play well as word of mouth sweeps. 39M for the weekend, and a strong first place finish are not out of the question.

Despicable Me 2 knocked out Turbo. That’s the only way to put it. Turbo may have outgrossed the sequel on Wednesday, but Despicable Me 2 is already back on top. 7.5M on Friday for the Steve Carell cartoon and 24M for the weekend. Turbo on the other hand managed 6M on Friday, and looks to disappoint with around 18M for the weekend. It is doing about what Red 2 is doing, which is also disappointing, and looks to only get around 18M for the weekend.

Last weeks holdover, Grown Ups 2, is holding stronger than expected and should get 20M for the weekend. Pacific Rim dipped a little harder, and might get 16M over the weekend. All of the aforementioned films are pacing ahead of RIPD, which got 4.2M on Friday, and could get 12M for the weekend. RIPD earned a horrible C+ cinemascore from audiences, and won’t have word of mouth to help it chug along.
