I wasn't sure what to expect when I started to listen to this. This truly unique book is not what I expect at all and offers something dark and deliciously different. This is an original blend of dark horror and fantasy and something else entirely. There is no subtle build-up, no slithering noises or shifting shadows. From the first few lines, the author grabs you by the shoulders and starts to violently shake you. Things are strange and dark and twisty and all kind of wonderful. The story is in two strands. The first focuses on John's isolation at the cottage, his grief over his wife's death and the supernatural experiences he encounters. The second strand is letters from John's mother to his granddaughter. This strand is not as interesting but does help to develop the characters and build the impressive back story.
