The Blue Eye

One of the most popular attractions in Sarande is called the Blue Eye. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? But what exactly is it? The Blue Eye is a beautiful natural phenomenon: a river with very clear water originates from a stunning blue pool, which is more than 50 meters deep. And the shape of this pool resembles an eye. It is not situated in the center of the town itself, but in the surrounding mountains:

When we drove from Gjirokastër to Sarande, we had seen road signs to the Blue Eye – called Syri i Kaltër in Albanian. Lars and I assumed it would be a piece of cake to find it coming from the opposite direction. Surely there would be lots of road signs.

Well… our assumptions were wrong and after having driven around for an hour, we were completely lost. But luckily we could count on the local population. At a gas station we asked for some directions and three young men offered us to follow them to the Blue Eye.

And is it blue? Or is it a tourist trap? I think the pictures speak for themselves…
