The Black Quarterback is Now the NFL’s Leading Man. But at What Cost?

By Ceboscuit @ceboscuit

The NFL's top quarterback is Black. What sacrifices were made to get there?

Doug Williams and Michael Vick met at Grambling University to reflect on the trail they blazed for Black quarterbacks in the NFL. Williams was the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl in 1988, while Vick was the top pick in the 2001 draft. The NFL now boasts a record 15 Black starting quarterbacks, including stars like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. Projects like "The Great Black Hope" and "Evolution of the Black Quarterback" highlight the progress of Black quarterbacks in the league. Despite challenges, Black quarterbacks are now widely accepted and celebrated in the NFL, marking a significant shift in the sport's history.
