The Black Dog by Levi Pinfold – Book Review

By Maliasa
What a surprise! A great lovely scary surprise. I love books about monster and the title and cover of “The Black Dog”  by Levi Pinfold did not prepare me for the this book. My daughter also loves monsters and they do not scare her at all!  But children’s eyes may widen when you turn to the double page spread with the eerie looking Black Dog.  A perfect story to either laugh at, some children are difficult to scare, or to help children who are scared of monsters. This story will show them that there is nothing at all to be scared of.  Black Dogs may visit us all from time to time, but facing anxiety and fears is part of life.Small Hope, the youngest member of her family, is also the bravest. She goes outdoors one snowy morning and she meets a monstrous humongous Black Dog that has been terrifying her parents and siblings. “Golly, you ARE big!” she says, unafraid. “What are you doing here, you guffin?” Small teases the dog as she walks across the snow ground.  “You can’t follow where I go,/ unless you shrink, or don’t you know?” And the Black Dog follows her and for each page, he shrinks. . . A modern fairy-tale and a visual treat. Full of quirky details and atmosphere.
