The Big Fat Lulu, Cross Point Mall, Gurgaon: Beyond Pizzas

By Indian Food Freak @IFoodFreak

Fat Lulu is now a known name for good Pizzas in Gurgaon. I was pleasantly surprised that on a special invite to the newly opened The Big Fat Lulu at cross point mall, we were served many Italian dishes except the pizzas.

Deepak, one of the promoter at The Big Fat Lulu says, “We are an Italian restaurant however the name has now become synonymous with pizzas. We do not mind it, but want people to try our other stuff too at our new outlet at cross point mall which is as good as our pizzas”.

bruchettas

I must say the starting was brilliant. The three different of bruchettas, a simple cherry tomato & cheese, or the grilled zucchini and artichoke or the Tapenade, Beetroot jam, goat cheese & orange, all were outstanding. My favorite of the three was the tapenade bruchetta. For the uninitiated, tapenade is finely chopped olives, capers and anchovies topped with olive oil.

Grilled shrimp were fresh and mixed with calamari with lime ginger chili sauce, and it was a burst of flavors. Cajun spiced chicken skewers weren’t exceptional but accompanied with the peanut sauce, they made for a good beer accompaniment. Unfortunately Fat Lulu is still awaiting liquor license.

Pumpkin, corn and cream cheese Ravioli

Pumpkin, corn and cream cheese Ravioli retained a bite and sage flavored butter provided this dish a lovely finish. I have never been fond of risotto but can easily make out a good one. Unlike many places it was creamier without the addition of cream, which is the sign of good risotto, but the al dante texture was missing.

In the main course, apart from the blackened chicken with wonderful charred flavors and spices, the other two dishes failed to impress. Cajun spiced sea bass was a bit over cooked devoiding the lovely fish of its flaky flavors and the buff tenderloin steak was uneven leading to under cooked meat even though I like my steak rare, this one was raw.

Desserts

The meal ended with an assortment of desserts. For someone like me who has been avoiding desserts, I finished almost half of the platter and that speaks volumes about the desserts.

The Big Fat Lulu marks an era of no fuss Italian dining in the city with competitive pricing. I just hope the two dishes on main course is a teething issue.
