The Best of Intentions

By Heidi @missfinn

I’ts January 1st. The time when many of us make resolutions for the New Year and for me, this year is no exception. This year we as a family have decided to go Paleo. We are embarking on living ‘The Paleo Way‘ with a 10 week program from chef Pete Evans. Tomorrow we begin the Pre-program which lasts a week and then next week we begin the course proper. While initially I didn’t think this would be too much of a change in our eating habits already, it will involve a period of detox which is never much fun, at least until the symptoms subside and the positive results begin to kick-in. Over the last four years, my husband Nath and I do an annual detox which is pretty hard-core. It’s has 4 phases to it and is definitely not for the faint-hearted. It is definitely something we find easier doing together. I don’t know if I would have the staying power to do it on my own, that’s for sure! We keep each other in check so we don’t cheat. The best part of that detox is that we can drink coffee, so the sugar and gluten detox is easier to bear. So radically changing my diet for a couple of months every year isn’t new to me. This time though, with The Paleo Way, I will not only be quitting sugar, but also dairy, grains and coffee. Oh my god! Today I spent time cleaning out our pantry and fridge, removing any foods that are on the ‘Do Not Eat’ list and also anything that was out of date, (ew). The big clean-out actually got me pretty psyched and at the same time I was watching a bunch of informative interviews on the Paleo Way YouTube channel which has definitely gone a long way to strengthening my resolve to live this way. I just feel it in my bones that this is the way we should be eating. We already make most of our food from scratch, I can’t remember the last time I bought prepackaged ingredients. It’s going to be about refining and eliminating the toxic substances from our diet and also being more aware of what we put in our bodies because I firmly believe that food is the best medicine. Nath suffers from debilitating migraines and me, my hormones are way out of whack from estrogen dominance. Both of us hope that this way of eating will eliminate or at the very least, reduce our symptoms. Our kids eat what we eat, so they’ll do much better with less sugar in their diet and while I’m not sure how this will go when it comes to school lunches, at least I have about 3 weeks up my sleeve to work that out before they go back to school. That’s the plan anyway!

I haven’t written any posts for about a year and a half and I was close to actually deleting this blog altogether but today while cleaning out my pantry I was inspired to begin writing about our new endeavour. I hope it keeps me inspired and I hope it inspires some of you out there (if anyone actually reads this it’ll be a miracle!)

Love & light,

Heidi
