The Best of Germany’s Schwarzwald

By Thecompulsivetraveler @anyaosk

Blogging always slows down for me in the summer – too many things to see, too many places to explore… But as I promised in my last post, today I’m going to walk you through some of my favorite restaurants just outside Baden-Baden.

Located in the beautiful Schwarzwald region, Baden-Baden itself is a wonderful place to stay, but if you live and breathe nature and would like to enjoy the breathtaking views of rural Germany, be sure to rent a car and explore the mysterious Black Forest. Gliding through the emerald hills and villages with gingerbread houses, you’ll be impressed by the thriving German countryside. No matter which town you choose for your final destination, you’ll find traditional German hospitality, friendly people, comfortable lodging, and remarkable scenery.

One of the places that impressed me most was a town called Baiersbronn. Featuring some of the world’s best hotels and restaurants, this place will probably leave you broke but with a baggage full of impressions. I had a chance to dine at the three-Michelin star restaurant Schwarzwaldstube (aka Black Forest House), located in the Traube Tonbach hotel, and I have to tell you, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The degustation menus are pricey (155Euros for a six-course menu and 185Euros for an eight-course menu) but definitely worth every cent. The European food virtuoso Harald Wohlfahr, paying homage to the traditions of haute cuisine, knows how to impress his guests. With the collection of food, the servers rocking bow ties and the great ambience featuring spectacular views, this place is sure to become the highlight on your restaurant list.

Another great place to check out outside Baden-Baden is a petite fish farm called Zur alten Mühle (both hotel and restaurant), also located amongst the emerald hills of the Schwarzwald. Picturesque views and fresh salmon-trout caught and cooked to order will satisfy anyone’s cravings. Even my boyfriend who pretty much despises any kind of seafood was “nom-ing” along with everyone else.

And when you’re done eating, there’s a great opportunity to shed off all the extra pounds on Schwarzwald’s numerous hiking trails!
