The schools closed their locations in the spring because of the Coronavirus pandemic and many have already announced that they will stick with distance learning models this fall. Many school districts offer student laptops, typically small screen Chromebooks that are affordable and easy to manage for schools, and portable and easy to use for students. If you think your kids will be attending some or all of the classes remotely in front of a computer screen this fall, and have the resources, you may want to invest in a bigger, more powerful laptop than your school district offers.
The cheapest way to learn from home is with a Chromebook laptop. Not only do they cost hundreds less than Windows laptops and MacBooks, they're also easier to use thanks to the optimized Chrome OS. You'll also find Chromebook laptop models with displays that are larger than the undersized 11.6-inch Chromebooks typically on display in school districts. If you don't lug the laptop to school every day, you can opt for a more spacious display that means less scrolling through websites and more space to work in Google Classroom and other online learning tools.
