The Beginner's Guide To Podcasting

So, you've decided to take the plunge into podcasting!

Like blogging, podcasting can be exciting and fulfilling, as well as a great way to increase your exposure and influence in your field. But, it also requires preparation, consistency and a hearty commitment.

Naturally, your first episode will require more time and effort, but as you get into the groove, you'll find your comfort level and ease into the process relatively quickly.

Like any radio or TV show, it's a great idea to come up with a topic that's fits in with your general theme. Think up a list of bullet points that you'll cover throughout the show to keep you on track so that you don't lose your train of thought.

Some people like to hit the record button and wing it, but most of the great podcasters carefully plan their content so that they can include valuable takeaways that will keep their listeners coming back for more.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with ad-libbing to a certain extent. After all, you want your personality to shine through, but a bunch of humming and hawing isn't exactly entertaining.

Depending on the complexity of your show or how scripted you need to be, you can elaborate on your episode planner and personalize it in a way that makes it easier for you to flow naturally.

As you first start out, you might consider a couple of trial runs so that you can make sure you're comfortable with your content. You might also consider recording in segments so that editing or re-recording is easier after the fact.

Small mistakes are natural and add that human factor, but there can be a fine line between sounding "human" and totally inexperienced.

Preparation goes a long way towards success in whatever you plan to achieve, and podcasting is no exception.
