The Basics of Making Your Own Dog Food

By Starring Sue Starring Sue @starringsue

Last year, I told you how I prepared dog food for my beloved pups. If you haven’t read it, go ahead and click here. It is extremely important to know that homemade dog food isn’t for everyone and I can’t emphasize enough  how important it is to stay away from certain ingredients, so PLEASE do your research. For more information, make sure to ask your veterinarian.

I received a few emails asking if boiling chicken was the only way to prepare dog food, and the answer is no. In this recipe, I grilled turkey breast cutlets. In general, dog food should comprise 1/3 protein (from meat, eggs, or dairy products) and 2/3 grains and vegetables. This recipe is similar to one I shared last year. I promise the next one will be different.

Ingredients:

1. Brown Rice

2. Canary Beans

3. Bag of Vegetables

4. Turkey Breast Cutlets

Directions:

1. Start by making brown rice on your rice cooker.

2. Boil the vegetables for about 10-15 minutes. Once they are ready, drain them and cut them into pieces.

3. Boil the canary beans for about 30-45 minutes. Note: I had the canary beans soak overnight, so they could cook faster.

4. Put a tiny bit of olive oil on the turkey breast cutlets, and allow to grill for about 6-8 minutes each side.

5. Next, mix everything in a bowl.

6. Lastly, with a measuring cup, put the food into containers and place them in the freezer. Make sure to thaw overnight to serve the next day.
