The Average Weight of a Diamond Engagement Ring

A lot of people, when they are shopping for an engagement ring, want to know if there is an average size diamond. They want to know if there's an average so they can decide on a price point and find the perfect diamond ring for them.

So while every budget is different, we think it's helpful to understand the average weight of a diamond before you start shopping. Let's start by talking about how a diamond is defined and how the average weight is calculated.

The four C's

Understanding the four c's are an important aspect of understanding the carat weight of the diamond. The four C's are the cut , , color , and clarity of a diamond. Each of the four C's will ultimately determine the overall quality of a diamond by a grader or retailer. carat

Diamonds occur naturally in a wide range of colors. Some of these colors are more valuable than others which makes them harder to grade. And some colors are easier to grade using a letter system. Each letter serves as a different color grade and just as the size of a carat can vary in price. An average diamond is a natural stone without a clear color.

Another important aspect of choosing the perfect diamond is choosing the cut. Some of the most common stud cuts include round, square, and asscher, and princess. While some of the lesser common cuts include pear-shaped, and marquise.

The clarity of a diamond refers to the degree in which inclusions are present on the surface of the diamond. This could be a chip or a dent in the surface or some sort of discoloration. These imperfections are measured using a clarity chart and can vary from diamond to diamond.

Ah, carat weight. The last, and most important C on our list. Diamonds with higher carat weights can often appear to be (and can be) larger than a one with a smaller carat weight. However, proportions can and will also affect its appearance.

Diamond's that cut too deep will hold more of their mass at the bottom of the stone, where it can't be seen. But if that same diamond were to be cut too shallow instead it will then hold more mass at the top, where it can be seen.
