There were no welfare reforms in the 1960’s that I am aware of. There was something called MARS, Man Assuming Role of Spouse, but I am not sure if that started in the 1960’s. Anyway, it was the rightwingers who were behind MARS, not the Left. The rightwingers thought that if there was a man in the picture, she should not be getting welfare as he ought to be able to support the family. A lot of people on the Left hated MARS because it caused women to keep their boyfriends away from them, causing a limited male role in their lives.
Believe it or not, welfare was started in 1935 by FDR. There were few to no changed in welfare from 1935-1970. From 1935-on, your welfare always increased if you had more kids. It was not some new development that started in the 1960’s. However, the increase were so small that they really didn’t keep up with the costs of having another kid, so any woman who had more kids to increase her check was a moron.
Almost all Western social democracies have similar welfare programs to American AFDC. There have been almost no problems with most Western welfare programs. Supposedly the only problems are here in the US, and those problems are all with the Black population.
We got rid of welfare in 1995. Are there fewer Black single Moms than before? Of course not. The rate is just as high as ever, if not higher. The idea was that if you got rid of welfare, the men would stick around and maybe marry these women or live with them instead. Well, they got rid of welfare, and the men are still not staying with the women.
The anti-welfare argument has completely failed.
Obviously, there will be vast number of single Moms in the Black community whether there is welfare or not. In much of the world where Black people reside, there are no welfare or social programs. Black people are actually way more fucked up in those places where they get no state assistance and live in horrible poverty than they are in the US where social programs at least keep them alive.
The truth is that Black people fuck up everywhere. They fuck up in the West when they are on social programs. They fuck up actually way worse in the Third World where there are no such programs. Black people are going to fuck up, social programs or no social programs. Blaming social programs for Black people’s problems is righting idiocy.
Now I have no problem with forcing the Moms to work, even at a state job, for the check. However you need to provide child care for the kids. Nevertheless forcing the Moms to work for the check does nothing to get rid of the basic problem that she is a single Mom. Just because she is working does not mean some Black guy is going to marry her now.
The anti-welfare argument lies in the dust, completely destroyed.
AFDC means Aid for Dependent Children. Read that? It says “children.” The idea being that the state had a role to support kids even if the parents were too poor to take care of them. In addition, we have no affordable child care in the US. So a single Mom who takes a job has no one to take care of her kid. She can’t afford childcare, so she can’t take a job. Suppose we gave single Moms no money to support their kids? Well kids would not be supported. They would either suffer in horrible poverty or they would die. Obviously both of those are worse than living on welfare.
Honestly the anti-welfare argument is utter garbage. Only fools fall for it. Once you examine what welfare is really all about, the anti-welfare argument collapses in dusty ruins.
