Tharanga Gunawardena and Tharindu Hendeniya were appointed Captain and Vice Captain of the Sri Lanka Hockey team. The former Matale Christ Church old boys are experienced players of the present hockey team.
Tharanga Gunawardena the mid field player from Sri Lanka Air Force represented the National team for the first time at the World League Hockey Championship in Doha Qatar in 2012 while he also took part at the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018, 2016 South Asian Games and Asian Hockey Federation Tournament in 2016 and 2022. In addition the experienced striker Tharanga participated at the 2012, 2016 and 2017 World League Tournament and 2014 and 2018 Asian Games qualifying tournaments.
Meanwhile the current Sri Lankan number one goal keeper Tharindu Hendeniya from Sri Lanka Army represented the National team from 2014. He was a member of the National team for the 2014, 2018 Asian Games, 2016 South Asian Games, 2016 and 2022 Asian Hockey Federation Cup tournament. He was also a key member of the Sri Lanka team at the 2016, 2017 World League Hockey Championship and 2018 Asian Games qualifying tournament.
Sri Lanka Hockey Federation President SSP Kamal Pushpakumara is keen to provide more International exposure for the National hockey team and their first target is the next Asian Games in China.
