Thailand - Koh Samui

By Suravishome
Koh Samui is a long way from Krabi. Here's the route we took -
  • Mini bus from Pak Up hostel to Krabi bus station (30 Baht per head)
  • Bus from Krabi to Surat Thani (3 hours, 140 Baht per head)
  • Seatrans bus + ferry from Surat Thani to Samui Pier (2 hours, 240 Baht per head)
  • Mini bus from pier to Penzy Guesthouse (1 hour, 100 Baht per head)
The total came up to 510 Bahts. On hindsight, we should have just taken the Pak Up hostel offer for 400 Bahts from the hostel to Samui Pier. Would've saved us a lot of running around! Koh Samui is on the east coast of Thailand. Pretty much the hub for heading out to places like Koh Phangaan, Koh Tao and so on. Our plan was to stay a few days and then head out  to Koh Tao for scuba.
So, this was the fourth day of the trip. It had been excellent so far, and considering the next few places, it could only get better! :) I think way too many of our conversations kept going back to Maya Bay and how going back in time would have been handy right now. We checked into Penzy Guesthouse and immediately warmed up to Penzy and her husband. Extremely helpful and always with a smile. The guesthouse was small but comfy. Rooms were absolutely huge and all four of us fit in very easily. Located very close to Chaweng beach, it is walking distance from a whole lot of good places.
That evening, we dragged our tired feet to this place called The Loft. Bad Thai food, but free pool and 1+1 cocktails. Added up to a pretty decent evening. :) From there, we went to Ark Bar (just because I had read online that this place is all energy and parties till 4 in the morning! :P). It was just another loud and yuppy place. Yes, places where drunk people nod their heads to music you can't differentiate, I call such places yuppy. :P These places seem straight out of zombie land! We lounged on their beach chairs for a while and then started walking back along the beach to the guesthouse.

The next day was a really lazy one. We were living right next to the beach, and yet managed to not go to the beach at all! Sometimes, the pursuit of food can be a little futile you know. And I can be a difficult one to give up this pursuit. We picked up bikes and well, it was a vacation. So, I was already happy high on a couple of beers. While S drove, I sang myself hoarse at the back! The morning was spent looking for this place called Fish n Chips in Maenam, which we later realized was closed for renovation. After more than a hour and a half of driving in circles, we settled for Angela's Bakery. Angela's had excellent food, but then we did end up wasting all that time! By the way, if you do go there, try the Chicken n Nut and Fish n Chips. Quite commendable.

Maenam beach - a breather after the wild goose chase

Angela's and all the food we devoured!

Next in line was a couple of hours of massage! Thailand and massages are synonymous. You can't not have one while you're there. For the record, am hinting at actual massages, just in case your thoughts went in the other direction (because Thailand is also synonymous with a whole lot of other things :P). Penzy had suggested this placed called 'My Friend' on Chaweng beach road. I got a foot + back + head + shoulder massage which was just out of this world! S got a Thai massage which is more like complex yoga. She did say it was very good, but I am really glad I stayed away! Those were two of the best hours we spent in Thailand, that too at a very nominal price. If you are in Samui, this place is highly recommended!
The evening plans were the usual ones. Drink and chill. :) The boys had nicely headed off to some place to have Guinness without telling us. We were supposed to meet at this pub called Tropical Murphy's but the two were nowhere to be seen! That too while S and I had no money or phone. Yeah, the things men do for alcohol. :P  Tropical Murphy turned out to be just brilliant! It took all of one huge mug glass of Hoegaarden beer for us to stop cursing them! :D You must go here! We had this baked potato and shrimp with garlic sauce dish that I still can't get out of my head. The upper floor of Murphy's has pool tables and a jukebox. There was a pretty memorable performance by the guys on songs that I can't remember at all! :)

Tropical Murphy- awesome place!

Hoegaarden beer

We were really bummed at these two!

Baked Potato and shrimp in garlic sauce - yum!

Putting up a performance for the girls :P

Next in line was scuba diving in Koh Tao and all the apprehension that comes with me going in water. :)
