This may surprise some people, but the bright red state of Texas (which voted for Trump and hasn't elected a statewide Democrat in more than two decades) is not happy with the job Donald Trump is doing. While 43% approve of the job he's doing, a substantial majority of 54% do not approve -- an 11 point margin.
And one of the reasons they don't approve is the way he's handling immigration issues. While his trumpistas like the anti-immigrant stance Trump has laid out, most Texans don't (see charts below). Texans have a long history of interaction with Mexico -- an interaction that benefits both Texas and Mexico. They know that if Trump gets his way, the state's economy will suffer greatly (bigly?).
About 58% of Texans don't like the way Trump is handling immigration, while only 38% like his policies --a 20 point gap. And 61% oppose the building of a wall between Texas and Mexico, while only 35% support building the wall -- a 26 point gap. An even larger gap of 31 points exists when respondents were asked if they supported Trump's desire to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, with 62% opposing that and only 31% supporting it.
These charts were made from information in a new Texas Lyceum Poll -- done between April 3rd and 9th of a random sample of 1,000 Texas adults, and has a margin of error of 3.1 points.
The poll also questioned respondents on who they would prefer in the 2018 Senate race (Ted Cruz or either Democrats Beto O'Rourke or Joaquin Castro). Those charts are below. Some think it shows a weakness in Ted Cruz. I tend to disagree. What it shows more than anything else is that a plurality of voters simply aren't ready to think about that senate race yet (note the big percentage of "unsure" voters).
