Our first instinct upon reading Tennessean accounts of how the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission was conducting affairs was to wonder why, in a world where every other transportation has been deregulated, are we bothering to regulate taxis?
In a report commissioned by Metro government and released July 2, RPM Transportation Consultants gave Nashville sobering news about the performance of its taxi companies and the folks charged with overseeing it. Combined with recent stories in The Tennessean about how taxi inspectors were “posing” as police officers and the commission was dallying on issuing up to 88 new permits, citing the need for additional inspectors, the community witnessed how government should not work.
