Basically, another totally wide open category and race. With shows ending, and the Roy boys no longer eligible, the Actor category is looking to shake things up. but, just who will benefit?
1) Will Be Nominated: Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun)
Should Be Nominated: Abstain.
I can’t fully comment on the exact inner working of this performance, since my interpretation is from a blind perspective, which had someone doing the dubbed voice, and audio description covering the rest. I could hear the way he chose to deliver lines, and I thought there was some strong acting there, but unlike some of his co-stars that ventured into English, this was a Japanese performance. i don’t have a problem with that, and I wouldn’t force him off my list just because. I see that his performance was well received, and I think Shogun is going to do some heavy lifting this season.
2) Will be Nominated: Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun)
Should Be Nominated: Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun)
i think Cosmo is pretty much a lock too. It’s tough to lock in two nominations from the same show out of six nominees, but I’m leaning toward this being the reality. Cosmo was fantastic, and I think he’ll be rewarded. I also think one of the Shogun guys will win, I just can’t tell which one.
3) Will be Nominated: Walton Goggins (Fallout)
Should Be Nominated: Walton Goggins (Fallout)
I also agree with Goggins, who stepped into a role tailor made for him. Roles like this from similar shows typically don’t have a problem getting that first season nomination. Even Andrew Lincoln managed a nomination for the first season of the Walking Dead. He might even have a better shot than his Amazon counterpart.
4) 4) Will be Nominated: Gary Oldman (Slow Horses)
Should Be Nominated: Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
The critical love for Slow Horses in its final stages will keep Oldman in the conversation, and as the most well known cast member, he’s the most likely to benefit. I think the show will miss on the Series nomination, but Oldman might sneak in over some other more likely candidates whose series have series nods. Though, Tom Hiddleston’s work on Loki, slowly developing this character into what he achieved in the most recent season should be worthy of a nomination.
5) Will be Nominated: Donald Glover (Mr and Mrs Smith)
Should Be Nominated: Joel Kinnaman (For All Mankind)
If I had to give six spots, I’m again looking at the series lead of the most underrated show, and I would make sure Kinnaman got a spot. I don’t think Glover would be that far from my top six though, because I adore him as an actor. but the balance of this show, the action and the comedy, give his character an oddly inconsistent frame. Potentially even less obviously dramatic than his co-star. I think this will happen for him, but I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t.
6) Will Be Nominated: Ramon Rodriguez (Will Trent)
Should Be Nominated: Ramon Rodriguez (will Trent)
I can’t predict this in series and not say Ramon comes along for the ride. Since a lead actor nomination for The Guilded Age seems like a stretch, it is basically down to whether or not Dominic West can steal a spot. And, from who?
7) Dominic West (The crown)
For the final season of the crown, can West sneak into the final six, with a performance that was well received in a season that wasn’t? He’s not quite the same level as Gary Oldman, so I’m thinking Oldman takes his spot.
8) Idris Elba (Hijack)
I’m not counting out Elba, who individually received praise for his work on this show. I think it was a little too long ago, and that will keep him out of the race. But, he is idris Elba.
9) Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
He’s got a chance. He’s not totally out of the running, he’s just down the list a bit.
10) Giancarlo Esposito (Parish)
So I mentioned in my Drama series projections that voters don’t watch AMC shows. technically, Parish is in its first season, so I will remain positive and say they woke up and remembered AMC existed, and how much they love nominating Esposito. He has been nominated five times previously, for his work on The Mandalorian. There is some possibility.
