Take a Look at This 266-feet Long Helium-Powered Airship in Flight

By Nrjperera @nrjperera

Remember those giant helium-filled balloon-like airships that people used to fly around in the early 1900′s? Those things used to be very popular and useful, right until airplanes were invented. But, that doesn’t mean they stopped being cool. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this giant thing and tell me if it’s not cool.

Aeroscraft is a gigantic airship currently being developed by San Diego-based Aeros Corporation. The project has been in the works since 2006 and earlier this month, this big airship got filled-up with helium to take flight for the first time. According to Gizmag, 266 feet long and 97 feet wide smaller prototype version of Aeroscraft was used for this flight test.

Don’t be amazed yet, because the final Aeroscraft is expected to be even bigger than this one, made with aluminum and carbon fiber standing at over 400 feet long. And it will be capable of lifting about 66 tons. Which will be a useful way to deliver supplies to remote locations around the world, even faster than a naval ship.
