I believe applesauce is one of the most versatile dishes I can make.
A really good applesauce can be served as a side dish, made into a dessert, or added to cookies, cakes and muffins.
When I was growing up, Mom would serve us applesauce with crushed graham crackers and whipped cream. As you can see, her creation remains a comfort treat to this day.
If you get a chance this week, make a batch of this spicy applesauce and freeze it for the holidays. You’ll be surprised at how often you’ll use it. I even add it to my morning yogurt!

- 6 cups apples , peeled, and chopped into large bite-sized pieces
- 1 ½ cups water
- 4 tablespoons maple syrup, preferably 100% maple syrup
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
- Preheat a large pot over medium high heat.
- Add ingredients, stirring to bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to medium, cover the pot and simmer for 30 minutes until fruit is very tender, but you can still view the apple chunks. They aren't so tender that the turn to mush.
- Remove from heat and cool.
