Sutja Gutierrez has a big heart, but not necessarily a soft one. It’s hardened and cracked, and through those cracks seeps truth and a hypnotizing quality worthy of the listener’s full attention. The music is flowery and free flowing, but you can never quite pin down where the flow is headed — it’s somewhere between the spirited and the supernatural. Songs, such as “Stuff Song” and “El Magico” take their time with sinister buildups like the deep end of an original Phillip Marlowe novel. Gutierrez is openminded to experimentation, but his big heart seems to be in equal proportion to his mind.
