The teenager was surfing at Wooli Beach, 630 kilometers north of Sydney, when he was bitten in the leg by the shark.

“Several surfers came to his rescue before the young man was brought back to shore,” said New South Wales state police in a statement. The young surfer died on the spot, despite attempts at resuscitation.

This is the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia since the beginning of the year, after the death of a man of 36 years old, occurred a week ago while fishing with a harpoon on Fraser Island, a tourist island located 400 kilometers north of Brisbane.

Australia is one of the countries where shark attacks are the most frequent but they are rarely fatal.
