Supporting a Roof During Demolition

By Kravelv

Removing wall between adjoining rooms create a spacious feeling and proves good for the floor. The framing materials required for this project should be 12 feet long. Rim and decoration include extra expensive. Most of the time floor and roof demolish because the lack of light reaching the house and moist destroys the structure slowly. It requires a helper, carpentry tools, flat bar, and sledgehammer. Two different types of saw, a circular saw, and reciprocating saw would be used for cutting framing and nailing. There are steps of supporting a roof or floor during demolition.

Strip the Drywall

Start the first step of shutting the electric circuit and banging holes. Now, check for obstruction and remove any of the trim. Join the ceiling and adjoining walls with the tape and slit it for next process. Tear off the drywall careful from all the sides of the wall.

Construct a Temporary Support Wall

Building temporary support wall starts with cutting the slot in the ceiling from one side of the wall. Build one support wall or two walls as per the requirement of bearing wall. Use nails with a hammer for building the wall. Be careful that blows would not harm the temporary wall.

Tear out the Bearing Wall

Stud of bearing walls would be knockout with the sledgehammer. Cut the nails through using the reciprocating saw. You can use any tools for pulling the nails that would be holding the studs with the adjoining framing. Keep protecting yourself by bending over the leftover nail in the plate.

Prepare the Beam Pocket

For preparing the beam pocket, you first have to remove the backer stud by cutting the nails are holding backer studs. Cut the stud in the half for removing it. Be careful about the cables that may exist in some of the walls. Cut them or remove them carefully. Drive in a screw, cut through the blocking stud and pull out the halves for setting the beam.

Stand the Temporary Beam Cradles

Install the beam cradle by assembling 2 beams, and screwing them to connect plate. Stay attentive about the measures for the width of the beam as the set beam has to shim it up tightly to the plate on the ceiling.

Place the Beam

Set the beam by cutting the beam into length and cut marks for clearing tie plates within the adjoining walls. Now, slip all the beam members in the right place. Then rest the beam members on the temporary cradles. Put the nails in the desired place for setting the beam.

Add Floor Blocking and Remove the Temporary Wall

The process will start with installing the blocking under the beam ends by cutting blocking that exists between the floor joists. Use toenail and end-nail for blocking the beam ends. Determining the location of blocking is very important. After adding floor blocking, you can easily remove the temporary wall.

Alternative: Hide the Load-bearing beam in the ceiling

The next step needs constructing 2 temporary walls from the bearing wall and then tearing out other bearing wall. Perform all the steps to tear out bearing wall and hide the load-bearing in the ceiling. Install the beam at once and fasten the joists acting as collar ties. In the final step, cover up the opening drywall.

Removing walls that are only creating more destruction in the roof are of no use so it is better to remove them by following the above-mentioned process.
