Supporting a Cause: Breast Cancer Awareness

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

I had the most delightful afternoon yesterday on the island of Madeira. As I’ve said before, whenever I’m traveling I always make time to treat myself to an afternoon high tea. Yesterday’s tea was at a really lovely setting: one of the most famous hotels in Madeira, Reid’s Palace Hotel. I like to call it the Pink Hotel because the exterior is painted pink. The tea was a special event: it was a high-tea fashion show with some of the proceeds benefitting an organization promoting breast cancer awareness. How fitting to have an event supporting breast cancer at a pink hotel? I couldn’t resist going!

Breast cancer awareness is such a worthy cause. I’m extremely fortunate that no one in my immediate family has had this disease, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t support the cause. I’ve witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of cancer and I’m a supporter of the American Cancer Society.  At the show, there were some women there who proudly wore survivor ribbons.

I was extremely enchanted with the whole experience. It was my very first fashion show. There were about 200 attendees there. The show’s Madeiran fashion designers presented a large variety of outfits for the winter season. These outfits were very creative: boxy, monochromatic, and textural designs. I noticed that the designers kept the jewelry at a minimum. Hats and big bags played a big part in the show. Purple was the predominant color of the fashions. The shoes were gorgeous! I saw lots of high heels as well as a few boots. Needless to say I took tons of pictures.

Ready? Here’s my fashion in a few pictures.

The show opened with a couple of colorful outfits and some interesting flowery head bands.

I must admit, these first outfits weren’t my cup of tea. Afterwards, though, we were shown a variety of clothes that were more in the fall/winter traditional color theme.

This bag had my name written all over it. Beautiful, just beautiful!

This was one of my favorites. The blue shirt is so vibrant.

The attendees at my table dubbed this model “the flight attendant”.

I’m going to end this fashion show with my favorite outfit. The model wearing it was wonderful; every time she walked by she would smile for my camera and pose just long enough for me to get a great shot. I loved the pop of red on her sweater– it contrasts well against the gray. Fabulous outfit!

This is just a small sampling of the outfits shown in the fashion show. The outfits were spectacular and the whole experience was amazing.

It was wonderful to be able to attend such a fun event and know I was also showing my support for such a worthy cause.
