Sunshine, Glorious Sunshine

By Clo Hutch @lashesoflife

So it’s not as hot or quite as nice as the middle of last week but we still have some sun coming out to brighten our day.

And it’s quite obvious the effect it has on some people… So many are generally happier. Have you noticed this?

But we can’t diagnose everyone with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) surely?

I do love a bit of sunshine, and did actually ditch my yoga class on Wednesday last week to spend part of the evening with Ally sat in Regents Park – I know that’s naughty and I do LOVE my yoga nights but come on, did you see how warm it was? How could I go in for hot yoga when I had the chance to spend some time outdoors (I didn’t get to go out at lunch either – watching it through the window is the worst!), and I think it makes me happier too.

Love waking up to a sunny morning!

Did you know there are actually so many positives to a bit of sunshine, and I know we England folk don’t get to see a hell of a lot sometimes, so it’s even more important to make sure we get a good enough fix.

I thought I’d share the benefits with you so you could see for yourself:

Vitamin D – ok, this might be the obvious one, but sunlight aids the body in producing vitamin D. We get about 90% of our vitamin D from the sun, which is essential for helping the body absorb calcium to keep teeth and bones healthy and preventing against other diseases later in life, such as diabetes and osteoporosis.

Serotonin – it has been found that sunlight is linked to serotonin levels, “the happy hormone” – a neurotransmitter which regulates appetite, sleep, memory and mood. Mood can be improved even more when mixed with exercise, in fact exercising outdoors has been found to produce more endorphins than exercising indoors! With higher serotonin levels also suppressing appetite, this can help with losing weight too.

Blood Pressure – a study by the uni of Edinburgh found sunlight to lower blood pressure cutting heart attack and stroke risk.

Aches and Pains – Taking a walk out in the sun can help warm muscles and joints and relieve aches and stiffness.

Not that I need this one, but it boosts fertility – sunlight reduces levels of melatonin which suppresses fertility. Did you know that one? I sure didn’t!

Melatonin also regulates sleep, with less melatonin in your body you need less sleep, so you’ll feel as though you have lots more energy. This is why you may not sleep as much in summer but still feel livelier.

Boosts immune system – sunlight encourages production of white blood cells, which helps to fight any infections ‘going round’ (although they won’t be going round so much if everyone’s getting sunlight!)

Can help ease minor skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Did you know the sun had THIS MANY benefits?

Whether you’re a big city body or a country bumpkin make most of those green spaces and outdoor areas and soak up a little goodness.

Perhaps you’ll make sure you get out for a little at lunch to catch some rays rather than sit at your desk to dine from now on, it really is good for your health.

But guys, sunlight is only good in moderation, don’t go OTT and get burnt! Then it gets bad for you, so watch out!
