The Ethereum Name Service, or ENS, is a naming system built on top of the Ethereum blockchain. It is decentralized, open, and can be expanded. ENS is in charge of turning names like “alice. eth” into things that machines can understand, like Ethereum addresses, addresses for other cryptocurrencies, content hashes, and metadata.
ENS was started by the Ethereum Foundation at the start of 2017, but in 2018 it broke off and became its own organization. An organization in Singapore called True Names LTD, which doesn’t make money, is in charge of making ENS. ENS is a public good and an important part of the community’s Internet infrastructure.
