Stephen Moyer has shown a different side to his fans this season with his recent directorial debut on True Blood. Last Week Stephen directed episode 8,”Somebody That I Used To Know” and did an awesome job. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Stephen for a quick chat about directing his first episode, the highlights of which he said involved separate scenes with co-stars Sam Trammell and Alexander Skarsgård. This video was show before Stephen’s episode aired, so he is a bit “mum” on revealing too much in the video below.
“Something big happens for Sam, um, so I had some amazing sequences with Sam that were quite difficult to orchestrate, so that was a lot of fun,” Moyer said of the Luna shifter body switch-a-roo that went down. “And [there was] a beautiful scene that I wasn’t in with Alex that I was really pleased with and the other person who was working with him that day, showed up, they both showed up, and it was really cool.”
Moyer went on to say that he was delighted with the entire experience, particularly the discovery process of finding unexpected nuances in scenes that didn’t initially stand out in the script.
“It’s so funny when you’re actually directing because things start popping that you don’t expect to pop, and something that you think is going to pop, maybe doesn’t quite have the impetus that you thought it might,” Moyer explained. “But I would say that on the 19 days that we shot my episode, there was one day that kind of went, ‘Aw that wasn’t quite [what I planned],’ but that’s not bad, I’ll take that ratio any day.“
So what is the most satisfying thing about directing versus just being the actor?
“I shot a couple of short [films] before and you’re always walking around going, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a crane in this moment? Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could steady-cam through here and do that or whatever,’ so I’d be sort of saying that out loud in the show,” he recalled of his planning phases. “And [the producers] are like, ‘You can have it, you can have whatever you want.’ And it was like ‘Oh my god,’ it’s like being a kid in a toy shop, you know.”
