St. Vincent Wowed Webster Hall [photos]

Cate Le Bon (@catelebon) opened last Thursday with a chill, solo set at Webster Hall. Without a full band to rely on, she carried herself well with a beautiful voice and overdriven guitar. There’s something very pleasant in the calm of a subtle opener — she was just enough to set the tone and prepare the audience for the amazingness that was St. Vincent (@st_vincent).

Before St. Vincent began, there was no annoyingly loud pop rock blaring out of the venue’s speakers. Instead the audience was wooed into a stupor by half hour of abstract, seemingly unstructured violin textures, somehow the perfect introduction to her music. The performance was obviously designed to support her newest album Strange Mercy – every tone, texture, sample, and nuance in her voice was surprisingly exactly like the album. She ended the night with an epic crowd surf, still managing to bang on her guitar while floating across the audience.
