St Kalistrat of Carthage

Another medium-sized icon that came to us unexpectedly is that of the Martyr St. Kalistrat of Carthage. Written once again in egg tempera on gessoed wood, St. Kalistrat was tortured and cut to pieces in jail after he refused to offer pagan sacrifice to idols while serving as a soldier in the military. Before that, his persecutors had twice attempted to drown him in the sea, but St. Kalistrat survived both attempts.
