After nearly 8 months from the release of Batman: Arkham City, we finally receive our first piece of story-related DLC. Does Harley Quinn's Revenge fulfill our long-awaited wishes?
(SPOILERS: IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, I SUGGEST YOU DO SO BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW, MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD)
Story/Presentation
Harley Quinn's Revenge takes place shortly after the events of the finale of Arkham City. Grief stricken, Harley plans to avenge Mr. J by taking over the remaining gangs and kidnapping Batman. Robin, who is now a playable character, sets out to rescue Bats with the help of Barbara and Commissioner Gordon. The entirety of the 2-hour campaign takes place within a small area of the once-expansive map of Arkham City. A majority of that time is spent within two buildings, both of which would have been previously explored if you played, and beat, the game. Although the surroundings have been modified to fit Harley's grotesque obsessions with The Joker, the campaign feels like nothing more than a side mission within the main story. The only added features are Harley's balloons to fulfill your popping needs, and the ability to play as Robin (for about a third of the campaign). Allowing players to continue playing as Robin, or expanding the playable map areas, would have greatly increased my interest. However, the bland story and boring ending made for a disappointing presentation. Many of us will however appreciate the little Easter Egg awaiting us when entering the Steel Mill, especially if you found that similar Easter Egg during the main story in the Steel Mill.
Core Gameplay
Harley Quinn's Revenge brings back the typical combat system that we all know and love, with the addition of Robin's various combat skills. If you haven't played any of the challenge maps, then Robin will be a welcome addition to the game. His shield block and zip line moves are wonderful for taking out those difficult enemies, and the refreshing environmental attack options make for a great add-on. Unfortunately, your time spent playing as Robin is short-lived, and Batman ultimately takes center stage once again for a majority of the DLC. Although it makes sense considering the ending of the main story, the addition of Robin as a continued playable character could have opened a literal whole new world in Arkham City.
Final Thoughts
Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC feels right at home in the Arkham City world, and fans of the game will appreciate the familiarity. That being said, it brings close to nothing new to the table and makes players feel like they are back within the confined walls of Arkham Asylum. With a $9.99 price tag, the disappointment lies in the short campaign and repetitive gameplay features.
Final Score: 7/10
