Sri Lanka women’s Hockey team will take part in the Asian Games 2023 qualifying tournament which is scheduled to be held from June 6 to 14 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Asian Games was scheduled to be held in China in next September 10 to 25 and postponed to 2023.
According to the Asian Hockey Federation organizers, 9-11 teams from across Asia are expected to participate in the tournament out of which 6 teams will qualify to the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023. The tournament will be held at the GBK Sports Complex Hockey Stadium Jakarta Indonesia.
The tournament will showcase a fierce hockey competition among the rising Asian hockey teams.Sri Lanka Hockey Federation also received the invitation from Asian Federation to take part women’s qualifying tournament and Federation officials are plan to send the women’s team.
Sri Lanka Hockey Federation has formed a 37 member National pool to focus on this Asian qualifying tournament while they are expected to prune down to 20 players at the selection trials. Last Asian Games held in Jakartha only Sri Lanka men’s team took part and finished at 9th place. If Sri Lanka women’s hockey team will qualify for the next Asian Games it is going to be historical as the first time Sri Lankan women’s stickers participate in Asian Games.
According to the former Hockey official, Defence services, Colombo, Wennappuwa, Matale, Kalutara and Police women’s team were participated at the last National championships in 2018 and the cream of the women’s players will get a chance to enter the National team.
Sri Lankan men’s team has already qualified to play 2023 Asian Games when they finished fifth place at the qualifying tournament recently in Bankbook, Thailand.
