After successfully finding 10 titles on Peacock that had audio description, and qualified for this list, I’m pretty sure Hulu has 10 titles. Peacock made me compromise and include at least two films I didn’t actually like, but I recognize that some things are subjective. How strong is my Hulu list? Read below to find out!
- A Haunting In Venice
- This one is for those looking for a few scares this season, but would really love to avoid the gore, or really anything too scary. It is Kenneth Branaugh’s third outing as Poirot, and it has a very supernatural element within. It is convincing enough that you think Agatha Christie’s detective is legit going to declare that the killer was a ghost.
2) Antlers
This wendigo themed horror film has everything. creepy kids, body horror, violence, gore, jump scares, and great acting. The main kid in this is fantastic, and the adult cast does some really strong work in this very underrated horror film. Not for the casual horror fan, but for those who don’t mind gore, and just haven’t seen this yet.
3) Birth/Rebirth
One of my greatest joys on this process, this spooky season, is going to be recommending this film. It was one of my favorite horror films of last year, and when I first read the plot, I was too squeamish to get in on it. It wasn’t what I expected, and while there are a few gory bits, mostly this is a horror drama, with complex ideas, and a fantastic performance from Judy Reyes.
4) Fresh
I’m not a big fan of cannibal movies, so for me to recommend this, you know there has to be something unique and special going on. Sebastian Stan delivers a deliciously evil performance, and there’s just something about this film that worked for me in a rare sub genre of horror that usually has me running for the door. How gory is it? Well, I did warn you about the cannibal thing.
5) Immaculate
It kinda goes where you think it will. Sydney Sweeney really fought for this film, and because there are more people enthusiastic about this than me, I’m including it. It isn’t that I didn’t like it, my grade would have just barely been fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has flaws. The final act is pretty crazy, and the ending is unexpected. The audio description is just the wrong narrator though. Wes Haas was too light of a choice for this.
6) 6) Matriarch
This underrated Hulu original is nuts. It is kind of hard to describe, but of a lot of their originals, Matriarch has stayed with me. I wouldn’t know where to begin, but I’d say this is not a beginner film for those looking for easy scares, but this also isn’t extreme gore either. it is very odd though. And, I still think about it, which is rare for a streaming film.
7) Poor Things
I was thinking, should I include Poor Things? It isn’t really scary, nor is it typical horror. It does have horror elements to it though, and the effects team had to work overtime on certain aspects. I think this might be an interesting film to add to the conversation this time of year, but more importantly, it is a great movie. This is perfect for someone looking to never be scared, but wanting something that feels adjacent to horror that isn’t a kids movie.
8) Prey
I love this movie. What a great concept for the predator franchise. Prey might be the best thing to have ever been sent to Hulu.Dan Trachtenberg (10 cloverfield Lane) directs the heck out of this. the concept is unique, and the cast give memorable performances. If for some reason you still haven’t seen Prey, horror just isn’t your thing.
9) Run
Hulu’s list is really shaping up to be quite fantastic. Next year, if I can keep nine of these, and swap Immaculate for a stronger film, Hulu might have ten really perfect choices. Run is one of my favorite Hulu originals, namely because Sarah Paulson delivers an award worthy performance. Kathy Bates set this standard in misery, but Sarah Paulson really rose to the task of meeting it years later. it isn’t that violent, but it is intense.
10) No One Wil Save You
So, in complete transparency, this film didn’t work for me. But I’m also here to talk about audio description, and this has one of the best audio description tracks around. It was in my top 3 last year. this movie has almost no dialog and needs audio description to survive. Jeff Heck did some excellent work on this film, and I have no problem putting this on here simply because the audio description is worthy. It is an alien survival movie, so, there’s enough to cause it to be in spooky season. The gimmick of no one talking in the film lost me. But, it allowed for a great AD script. Go figure.
