Spike Your Juice Review

By Bewilderedbug @bewilderedbug

I’m happily sitting here thinking how glad I am to have found this product.

Of course that may also be because I just had a glass

If you’ve met me  you know I’m a lightweight when it comes to alcohol and that I actually hate the taste of alcohol itself.  But this, I actually enjoyed.

The theory of Spike your Juice is that it changes normal, everyday juice into a fizzy alcoholic drink.  It basically ferments the juice for two days until it becomes a sweet but enjoyable adult beverage.  To make matters even better, as the newly formed alcohol sits, it gets dryer and less sweet and starts to taste more and more like a carbonated red wine.  And guess what.  I like carbonated red wine, probably the reason I like Spike your Juice alcohol.

The alcoholic beverage that was created as a part of my “Spike Your Juice” experiment is reminding me greatly of a carbonated red wine I enjoyed with some fellow bloggers at dinner after the ShesConnected 2011 conference – and I really enjoyed that wine – it was the first time I had tried a carbonated red wine, and it was amazing.

Anyway, just to let you know what Spike your Juice is about, I decided to take you through the process – it was most intriguing to see the chemical changes in the bottle happening right before my eyes, so I had to share.

First, in each box of Spike your Juice, there are six little packets of the Spike your Juice “magic”, six labels to label your bottle so that the kids don’t come home and accidentally drink it, a vacuum airlock & rubber stopper and of course instructions as to how to use the product, complete with a few Spike your Juice cocktail recipes.

The first thing you do is go out and buy your juice.  A 64 oz (1.89 L) bottle works best with each package.  Also, the instructions state that Spike your Juice works best with Grape, Cranberry, Pomegranate or any mixture of these by Welch’s or Ocean Spray.  This is because of their sugar content.  If you want to use other juices, feel free because it should work, once it contains a minimum sugar content of 20g per serving.

The next thing you do is crack open your bottle of juice, discard the cap and pour one package of the Spike your Juice powder into the bottle of juice.

Then seal with the vacuum airlock and rubber stopper, label and put one side to ferment.

After a few hours you’ll see the juice start to bubble.  It shocked me to see this because of course, Serena doesn’t read all the instructions and did not read that it would be a carbonated alcohol.  So Serena thought the bottle was going to blow up.  But it didn’t.  It didn’t even spill over.  Oh, and yes, in the video below, Serena thought it was day 2 when it was actually day 1 because she started the process at night.  Thank God for that label.

Anyway, after 48 hours, I took the airlock off and my friend Aeryn and I sampled a little bit.  At the time it just tasted like carbonated juice, so much in fact that she wanted to get a pack to make carbonated drinks for her husband who does not drink any alcohol (okay someone please revive @cocktaildeeva….).  Then we realized it was supposed to be alcoholic.

So again, I didn’t read the instructions, but apparently if you find it’s still not alcoholic enough for you, you just put the airlock back on and keep it at room temperature until the correct level of alcohol-isation has occurred.  Then you can imbibe to your heart’s content (just don’t drink and drive please!).

So would I recommend this product?  From what I have in my fridge waiting for me, yes, I would – but I think I will be experimenting with another bottle and trying to have it stay there for a week.  Then again, I may just swoon as  soon as I smell it!!

Spike your Juice is worth a try – it certainly brought out the “scientist” in me because I was fascinated with the reaction it had with the juice.  Oh, and if you are wondering what makes the juice ferment, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find out that Spike your Juice contains no artificial flavours or colours, and is made from yeast, organic evaporated cane juice and an emulsifier.  All items that you will find in various foods you consume everyday.  Oh and it only contains 5 calories….that is … until you add it to juice I guess.

Anyhoo, go try it – 6 packs can make up to 3 gallons of yummy alcoholic juices that you can use to make Martinis, Sangrias and many other mixed drinks and only costs you $9.99US (plus shipping and handling) on the website.  I promise you that you’ll enjoy it.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
