Spending Too Much On Auto Petrol and Gas?

Top Tips For Cutting Your Fuel Spending

Automotive Petrol and gas prices are constantly up and down and in recent years, prices have increased quite dramatically. Unfortunately, we cannot drive our vehicles without fuel, unless we are lucky enough to own an electric vehicle. Although the majority of us can’t avoid fuel altogether, we can take steps to cut the cost of fueling our vehicles.

Are your driving habits fuel efficient?

The way in which you drive your car can significantly improve fuel efficiency by an astonishing 30%. Driving smoothly is the key to retaining your fuel. Get into the habit of gradually accelerating and avoiding over-revving in order to make your driving more smooth and fuel efficient.

Always drive in the right gear. The correct gear is the highest gear possible which doesn’t put strain on the engine. Avoid braking harshly; try to allow your vehicle to come to a slow, natural stop by planning stopping in advance.

Believe it or not, small things that you may not even think of can reduce your fuel consumption. Driving with low tire pressure increases the drag on your car which can deplete fuel efficiency by 3%. Ensure that your tire pressure is always tip top to prevent your car from having to work harder and use more fuel.

The more weight your car carries, the more energy it burns. Therefore, taking steps to reduce the weight in your car can improve fuel efficiency because your car will not have to work as hard. Do you have an unused roof rack on top of your car? Take it off and improve your fuel efficiency by 2%. On the same note, de-clutter your car. Don’t carry around pushchairs and other items in your boot if you don’t need them that day. Once again, removing weight from your car can improve fuel efficiency by 2%.

Shop around

Don’t accept the price at the first gas pump you see unless you have no choice. The prices vary greatly from one forecourt to the next but generally, supermarkets are one of the cheapest bets. Before embarking on a motorway drive, be sure to fuel up at a cheap station rather than having no option but to fuel up at an expensive service station.

Comparing prices is easy with modern technology. There are now a number of websites and apps dedicated to comparing the price of fuel from one station to the next. Most of these websites are simple to use, you simply enter your postcode and you are provided with a list of local gas stations and their prices.

Make the most of special deals

If you have a local petrol station which offers some form of loyalty scheme, always go there if the price is right. If you have a Morrison’s store nearby with a petrol station, sign up for the Morrison’s Miles scheme. Not only is the petrol generally cheaper, you can collect point which are exchanged for a £5 shopping voucher after you reach a certain point. In you local gas station, sign up for their loyalty program to get many bonuses. Cheaper gas, car-wash, or simply collecting their extra points for other items sold in the gas station.
