South Africa pacer Dale Steyn celebrates one of his three wickets

Dean Brownlie’s maiden Test ton could not prevent New Zealand from a humiliating loss as South Africa won the first Test at Newlands by an innings and 27 runs inside three days on Friday.

In purist of 302 runs after being dismissed for a miserable 45 to make the hosts bat again, New Zealand were crumbled for 275 before tea.

Thanks to Alviro Petersen’s sagacious century and an array of contributions from the rest, Proteas had declared their innings for 347-8.

The dismissal of Brownle, who hit 13 boundaries and two sixes in his 186-ball 109, minutes before lunch opened floodgates for the tourists as they lost their last six wickets for 46 runs.

Newly-appointed skipper Brendon McCullum and wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling contributed 51 and 42 runs respectively but the rest of other failed to offer resistance.

Pace spearhead Dale Steyn claimed three wickets for 67 runs while Jacques Kallis recorded the figures of 2-31.

Vernon Philander, who demolished kiwi batting line-up in the first innings with the devastating figures of 5-7, finished with 2-31. He was adjudged man-of-the-match.

The second and final Test between the two sides will be played at Port Elizabeth from January 11-15. A series victory will help Proteas to strengthen their clutches over World No.1 Test rankings.
