The 59.6 carat flawless pink diamond, referred as the “Pink Star”, auctioned in a Geneva Hotel on the 13th of November this year fetches a colossal sum of $83 million, which is a world’s record bid for a gemstone at an auction. This oval brilliant cut plum size pink diamond is declared as an exceptionally rare IIA diamond, for its flamboyant transparency and premium quality. This gleaming oval shaped diamond was discovered in the year 1999 from a 132.5 carat rough stone, which was unearthed from the deep mines by De Beers and polished by Steinmetz Diamonds for over a period of two years. Set delicately on a splendid  ring, this luminous rock measures 2.69 x 2.06 centimeters (1.06 by 0.81 inches), and weighs to about 11.92 grams (0.026 pounds) making it one of a kind and an exquisite piece of jewelry. It was bought by a man bidding in the room, who informed the reporters that he was buying it on behalf of an anonymous buyer whom he represented. “Ladies and gentlemen, 68 million Swiss francs ($82 million) is the world record bid for a diamond ever bid and its right here,” said Sotheby’s David Bennett to praise the huge rock, as he brought down the hammer. The “Pink Star” was the penultimate in the lot and there were huffs of wonder as a model came and stood next to Bennett on the auction podium wearing the diamond, which was mounted on a ring. Around 150 people in the auction room erupted into approbation as the theme tune from the “Pink Panther” was played and the staff served glasses of pink champagne. Bennett told the reporters that “It surpassed our pre-sale estimate of $61 million. It’s a large amount of money in itself but I don’t think this stone has a price”. Sotheby’s later said that the buyer was, a New York diamond cutter named Isaac Wolf, who will rename the stone to “The Pink Dream”.
