Sophia’s Birthday Afternoon Tea at The Continental, Hong Kong

The Continental, Shop 406, 4/F Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, Hong Kong. A few weeks ago it was my friend Sophia’s birthday, so as a belated celebration, I decided to book her an afternoon tea treat at The Continental, because sometimes you just need to embrace your British-ness.
There are few things more indulgent than afternoon tea. Really though, who has the leisurely time to eat a non-lunch, non-dinner meal for more than two hours? Not I. But birthdays are special and even more so when said friend is the one that bails you out of silent dates and who goes into Ultra Mum Mode when you’re ill!
Afternoon tea at The Continental is bliss. Situated above Pacific Place in Admiralty, Hong Kong, it offers a sneak peek of the lazy hazy sun across the infamous city skyline – although am I the only one that wishes I could simultaneously be on the island AND view the island? – and the food is quite tasty to boot. We spent a late afternoon gossiping, laughing and getting into faux-deep chats as per usual, all with a charming menu of traditional English sandwiches, scones and cakes. Oh the sweet taste of home.
My favourites were by far the prawn brioche, Coronation chicken, fresh scones with Cornish clotted cream and duck egg mayonnaise sandwiches. What can I say?! I’ve become more of a savoury girl as of late! Desserts-wise, I particularly loved the salted caramel and chocolate pie(?) and little apple crumble – I’m easily pleased. Although I couldn’t fault a single dish of the tea set, it was all otherworldly good and if I had the time, I’d certainly do this every weekend. The tea selection itself at The Continental is also delectable: I opted for a lychee infusion whilst Sophia chose a classic Assam breakfast tea.
If you’re looking for a luxuriously respite from the city, then The Continental is a quintessentially British-European place to do see. Full-glass windows, shiny gold and emerald green leather surroundings make it a welcoming and light-soaked place to just sit and enjoy for a few hours. The staff are welcoming and helpful – hashtag bonus free soufflé – and you’ll never feel rushed, listened in on or out of place.
All-in-all, a well-earned recommendation and many a thumbs up for this afternoon tea. Presentation is beautiful and artistic and the taste matches well, too.
