Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that the present situation in the country could have been averted, if the country continued the practice of producing everything that can be made locally.

He was of the view that people got used to import everything that can easily be produced within the country.

“Today we have reached to a point where we don’t have Foreign Reserves to pay for our imports,” he said. The Archbishop added that Sri Lanka has defaulted on its debt and it is a shame to depend on foreign loans for the imports of goods needed to the country.

The Archbishop was speaking at the Christmas Midnight Mass at Christ the King Church in Pannipitiya on Saturday night.

Cardinal Ranjith said that value of a man cannot be determined by his wealth, power or strength.

“Material gains and money make people inhuman and it is very hard for the rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven as Jesus Christ preached. People have become slaves of the free economy and they are going after bogus Gods.

“An America Dollar appears that In God We Trust. It should be changed as In This God We Trust,” he said.

He said that society has seen a vast deterioration of human values and people from the lowest level to top level have got used to solicit gratifications.

The Bishop Conference requested the Catholics to celebrate Christmas in a simple manner.
