Social media has a history dating back to the 1970s.[14] ARPANET, which first came online in 1969, had by the late 1970s developed a rich cultural exchange of non-government/business ideas and communication, as clearly evidenced by ARPANET#Rules_and_etiquette’s “A 1982 handbook on computing at MIT’s AI Lab stated regarding network etiquette,” and fully met the current definition of the term “social media” found in this article. Usenet, which arrived in 1979, was actually beat by a precursor of the electronic bulletin board system (BBS) known as Community Memory in 1973. True electronic bulletin board systems arrived with the Computer Bulletin Board System in Chicago, which first came online on 16 February 1978. Before long, most major cities had more than one BBS running on TRS-80, Apple II, Atari, IBM PC, Commodore 64, Sinclair, and similar personal computers.

Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social media use. Social media can help to improve individuals’ sense of connectedness with real or online communities, and social media can be an effective communication (or marketing) tool for corporations, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, including advocacy groups and political parties and governments. At the same time, concerns have been raised about possible links between heavy social media use and depression, and even the issues of cyberbullying, online harassment and “trolling”. Currently, about half of young adults have been cyberbullied and of those, 20 percent said that they have been cyberbullied regularly.[11] Another survey was carried out among 7th grade students in America, which is known as the Precaution Process Adoption Model. According to this study, 69 percent of 7th grade students claim to have experienced cyberbullying and they also said that it is worse than face to face bullying.[12] However both the bully and the victim are negatively affected, the intensity, duration and frequency are the three aspects that increase the negative effects on both of them[13]

Given his status as a guru, some of the rants he posts on YouTube are surprisingly banal — conventional wisdom framed as blazing insights. A recent one, titled “Every Single One of You Is a Media Company,” argued that the Internet had reduced the cost of publishing to next to zero, and he beseeched viewers to produce content of genuine value. Subtract the panache and the urgency of his delivery and there is little left.

Ich werde von einem anderen Facebook- Nutzer mehrfach massiv beleidigt und reagiere darauf amüsiert, indem ich einen der Kommentare aufgreife und grammatikalisch korrigiere, wo skurriler Weise mir eine Rechtschreibschwäche vorgeworfen wird.  Facebook löscht daraufhin meinen Beitrag auf meiner Pinnwand komplett mit allen Kommentaren und belehrt mich über die Gemeinschaftsstandards. Mein Beitrag wurde von Facebook als Belästigung bzw. Mobbing eingestuft.  In der ursprünglichen Diskussion wurden alle Kommentare jenes Nutzers entfernt, die ich hier quasi als Beweise per Screenshot verwendet habe.  In der Ursprungsdiskussion wirken meine Kommentare nun sinnlos, weil die Bezugskommentare verschwunden sind. Ich habe diese Diskussion zuvor gesichert, jedoch Kommentare anderer Personen entfernt, die nichts mit diesem Dialog zu tun hatten.

Blogs can be updated frequently and are promotional techniques for keeping customers, and also for acquiring followers and subscribers who can then be directed to social network pages. Online communities can enable a business to reach the clients of other businesses using the platform. To allow firms to measure their standing in the corporate world, sites enable employees to place evaluations of their companies.[73] Some businesses opt out of integrating social media platforms into their traditional marketing regimen. There are also specific corporate standards that apply when interacting online.[73] To maintain an advantage in a business-consumer relationship, businesses have to be aware of four key assets that consumers maintain: information, involvement, community, and control.[76]

For that reason, you’re probably less likely to focus on ‘leads’ in their traditional sense, and more likely to focus on building an accelerated buyer’s journey, from the moment someone lands on your website, to the moment that they make a purchase.
