The use of social bots and chatbots has created an analytical crisis in the marketing industry.[40] Companies use social and chat bots to automate their social marketing that appears to consumers and other companies to be real interaction. The ability for bots to mimic human interaction makes it difficult for marketers and data analysts to differentiate between human interactions and automated bot interactions;[40] having implications for quality of data.[40] Companies continue to use bots to automate their social media interactions although the same bots are negatively affecting their marketing data causing a “digital cannibalism” in social media marketing. Additionally, bots violate the terms of use on many social mediums such as Instagram. This can result in profiles being taken down and banned.[41]
“Twitter only adds to the noise: it’s simply impossible to pack much context into its 140 characters. All other biases are present as well: in a country like Iran it’s mostly pro-Western, technology-friendly and iPod-carrying young people who are the natural and most frequent users of Twitter. They are a tiny and, most important, extremely untypical segment of the Iranian population (the number of Twitter users in Iran — a country of more than seventy million people.)”
Social media is becoming an integral part of life online as social websites and applications proliferate. Most traditional online media include social components, such as comment fields for users. In business, social media is used to market products, promote brands, connect to current customers and foster new business.
‘Calling Instagram a photo-sharing app is like calling a newspaper a letter-sharing book, or a Mozart grand era symphony a series of notes,’ Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom recently told The Guardian. ‘Instagram is less about the medium and more about the network.’
Path aimed to capitalize on Facebook backlash by offering a return to the original premise of a social network: Just you and your friends, and that’s it — no games, no ads, no losers you met in a bar “poking” you. Path was the private villa to Facebook’s out-of-control pool party. The idea had merit, but Path was even more notable for its design, brandishing animated action buttons and orderly layering long before the concepts went mainstream with iOS 7 and Google’s Material. Path’s premise was ultimately its undoing, however: By limiting the number of people you could connect with, it never achieved “the network effect” and was ingloriously sold to a South Korean Internet company five years after launch.
To summarize, Pull digital marketing is characterized by consumers actively seeking marketing content while Push digital marketing occurs when marketers send messages without that content being actively sought by the recipients.
In fact, 82 percent of small business owners are using sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Instagram to help grow their businesses. And if you are still standing on the social sidelines, there’s never been a better time to get started.

While your targeted social media metrics might be the most important step of a strategy, it’s often the spot most veer off the path. Vanity metrics like follower count and likes are always good to measure, but does it tell you the whole story of your brand on social media?
Do not get me wrong here and throw the baby out instead of the bath water, your list is great, but there are other things that need to be cleared up first, like why do you want a social media presence, and what will a social media presence do for your business.

It’s difficult to mention Yik Yak without bringing in Kik, the hugely popular app that, unlike other messaging apps, doesn’t require a phone number. Because you only need a username and an internet connection to use Kik, the app has become the main way for people to chat over internet without exchanging personal information. (It rarely takes more than a few minutes on Yik Yak before you see a question like, ‘What’s your kik?’).

The bottom line for most of these tools? If teens are using them respectfully, appropriately, and with a little parental guidance, they’re mostly fine. So take inventory of your kids’ apps and review the best practices.
@ Chris, please can you avail me more information on sweetalk? I have checked online but I could not lay my hands on any information about the new platform. I really need such platform for my upcoming business.
Pinterest allows businesses to showcase their product offerings while also developing brand personality with eye-catching, unique pinboards. When developing your Pinterest strategy, remember that the social network’s primary audience is female. If that’s your demographic, you need a presence on Pinterest!
It also means I can share snippets of my personal life with those that follow me, which I think is hugely important for brands these days. People want to know the people behind the business and when you share photos of trips or funny everyday stories it connects you with your prospective market at a deeper level.
Information overload: It’s not unusual to have over 200 Facebook friends or follow over 1,000 Twitter accounts. With so many accounts to follow and so many people posting new content, it’s almost impossible to keep up.
Thanks for the post, Kevan! 2015 is both the Year of the Sheep (Chinese calendar) and for me to become more serious about my social media presence (currently a very sad existence). You hit it on the head with “thrilling and overwhelming”. But your post has helped add to the thrilling by subtracting some of the overwhelming.

“Digital marketing starts with really rich content that people actually care about – including killer images. Then it’s delivering that content when and where your customers want it in hopes they like it and tell all their friends and followers. And make sure they can see it on a device that they use everyday, especially the one attached to their hip. But above all, don’t overwhelm people with your sales pitch. Keep it simple and teach them something so they consider you a valuable resource not just a company pushing product.”
Why is this awesome? This feature is perfect for people like me, who get inspiration at all hours of the day and night. You can use the scheduling feature to create drafts that can be edited later if needed.
4. Xing. Another professional networking and recruitment site, Xing has the global presence and focus that LinkedIn lacks. Although it can be mistaken for a job search portal, the site actually has a number of features and communities that make it easy to develop relationships with suppliers, colleagues and even thought leaders within industry.
Facebook is the most-widely used of the major social media platforms, and its user base is most broadly representative of the population as a whole. Smaller shares of Americans use sites such as Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and LinkedIn.
Socially savvy entrepreneurs know that it’s all about engaging the right audiences with valuable content. The online community has little tolerance for self-promoters who view social media as a means to free advertising. Given this, small-business owners face a challenge when it comes to striking a balance in using social media to engage and promote.
We always talk about where kids go after…what about where kids can go before, and still retain their privacy? There is a app called GeckoLife which allows one to create spaces to communicate privately. Has all the features others have like messaging, pics, video…but it’s done with a little more purpose. My kids use it with their friends…and family.
Many businesses aren’t quite sure how to tackle marketing on Twitter from a paid perspective. It’s certainly not a one-size-fits-all endeavor, and if you don’t quite know what you’re doing, you could wind up wasting a ton of money. Learn how to master Twitter advertising in this guide.
Digital marketing means different things to different people based on what aspect they are really based on, but one thing remains constant i.e it is the use of digital and electronic devices to advertise and promote a business or product. Even the traditional marketing agencies are now going digital, which means that it is, and will continue to be the main marketing platform for years to come.
Social media is as homogenous from network to network as soda pop is from brand to brand. Sure, it’s all social media, but Google+ and Twitter might as well be Mountain Dew and Pepsi. Each network is unique, with its own best practices, own style, and own audience.
Thanks for the great list and info Kelly! My 14 year old desperately wants to be using some of these apps. We have resisted so far, but realize that she really is an anomaly at this point so are now considering letting her at least use Instagram (as long as we come up with agreements about privacy settings etc). I’ve read that teens shouldn’t use their real name/photo on their profile as it’s publically searchable (despite the privacy settings). I see almost all her peers using their real name and photo, and they say it’s so they are searchable to friends. Makes sense, but seems unsafe – any tips on this?
