So You Don't Know What Career to Pursue?

By Jessicavenoy @lovelyjesscuh
Well guess what? You're not alone. I kid you not, I changed my major seven, yes seven, times throughout my first 4 years of college. Then when I graduated with my bachelor's degree in mass communications, I still had absolutely no idea where I was going or what I was doing.

As a child I wanted to be an author. Then in high school I was sure that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. During my first go round of college I was set on event planning. After college I went into personal training. Fast forward to now...I'm back in school pursuing, you guessed it, yet another career (speech-language pathology).
So I mean it when I say that you're not alone if you feel a bit lost when it comes to nailing down exactly what you want to spend your life doing career-wise.
It used to bother me that I changed my mind/path so often. People have always teased me about it. But now? It doesn't really bother me. I like change. I like exploring different avenues. I refuse to settle.

I've also come to know that not every hobby has to turn into a career. I've always thought that just because I was good at something or really enjoyed it that it just HAD to be my career choice. But that's not necessarily true. It's okay to explore hobbies and do things just because they make you happy.
So a little encouragement for those of you who are still figuring out what you want to do career-wise: Don't settle. Don't worry if you have to try a few careers on before choosing one. Don't feel like you have to choose just one for the rest of your life. Get out there and shadow people who do things that interest you. Ask questions. Put yourself out there. Fill your time with things that bring you joy. And most importantly - surround yourself with people who love + support you!
