Watch our MESS to YES Home Makeover!

We are honored to have been invited to participate in Serving Up Style a design event that supports Molly’s Fund a non-profit organization that raises awareness and supports families affected by Lupus. 24 design teams are selected to participate from the Northwest and surrounding states to create 16′ x 12′ dining spaces at the Oregon Fall Home and Garden Show 2013. The event is being covered by HGTV and you will be able to vote for our room on Houzz.com!

In keeping with our YES Spaces focus on stylish design that functions for the whole family we decided to create a room that is both whimsical and multifunctional (this is a show so there are some over the top elements we wouldn’t necessarily put in your home!) Our room is entitled “Book Fare”  an intended pun because really can you ignore the eight foot books in the room? I have always wanted a dining room that is lined with books and serves as a study/reading space as well so what better opportunity to create one? But rather than putting in actual bookcases we went big and bold with our fun book wall! We also have some other surprises in the details, projects we will be creating with actual books. Watch our YES Spaces DIY channel as we will be filming and sharing all of our DIY projects leading up to the October installation.

Here are just a few of the fun projects we will be undertaking!

The chalkboards are inspired by the original Cheaper By The Dozen books based on the life of Frank Gilbreth and his family. In the Gilbreth family dining room at their ramshackle beach bungalow Mr. Gilbreth would paint the dining room walls and ceilings with the solar system one summer or Morse code another year and then leave coded messages to hidden “treasures” that the first child to decode would discover. Here we kept the same idea but made it a little more palatable by creating decorative wall pieces that fit the decor and allow for learning by osmosis or intention.

I will only share one actual photo of the vintage “Barnes Dag” print from Sweden 1920. A poster celebrating “Children’s Day.” Something we celebrate at YES Spaces everyday! NW Rugs was kind enough to allow us to select this fantastic 9 x 12 handmade New Zealand wool rug from their Savannah collection. Wool rugs are perfect for family spaces because the lanolin is a natural stain repellant which makes cleaning up spills a breeze and keeps chemicals far away from your dining space. This rug will be available at NW Rugs and they currently have it in a couple of other colors.

All these projects are keeping us very busy at YES Spaces. Especially since our new project studio is being installed this weekend! I have the whole family lending a hand and we captured the transformation from beginning to end on time lapse photography. I’ll unveil the new design studio Monday or Tuesday here and at YES Spaces DIY and it will be followed by a whole new season of DIY videos!

Hope your summer is filled with creativity and activities that make your heart sing! (We’re partial to a rousing round of Danke Schoen  as we work!)
