SLFP’s senior Vice President Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the 20th Amendment enhances the executive powers of the President of the country and most of the time it is inequitable to the public.

He said the President revoked the State of Emergency that was declared and it is considered a victory for the SLFP.

Furthermore he added that the party is pleased with the appointment of the new Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.

Addressing the media at the SLFP headquarters yesterday he said that a discussion was held between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Parliamentary Group of SLFP and the President had invited SLFP to take on Ministerial portfolios. However Siripala De Silva said that the Party rejected the President’s request as Sri Lanka needs viable solutions at the moment instead of a share between portfolios.

“We said that we do not need any Cabinet positions but only a plan by the government to overcome the current crisis. Central point where all these began was with the ban of chemical fertilizers. We have an agriculture based economy, therefore when the center fails we have to use foreign reserves to fill those gaps and that is where we went wrong”, he added.

Former Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that while they were in the Cabinet, the Party presented the pros and cons of organic fertilizer and requested the government to take the project step by step, however the request was unheard by the government. He added that it was only the farmers who protested at the beginning but now the entire economy is facing a critical situation thus even the middle class has taken to the streets.
