SkinnyShirt: Layering with Ease

By Bridgetteraes @BridgetteRaes

While helping a client with her wardrobe this past weekend, I was introduced to the SkinnyShirt. It was hanging on the door of her closet and when I didn't recognize it, because I know just about everything she owns, she said, "Oh that is my SkinnyShirt. I love it." On the hanger, it looked like a collared shirt with a slim middle and she explained to me that SkinnyShirts are tops that you use to easily layer under knits and sweaters. I love when clients introduce me to new things. I went home and looked it up.

The SkinnyShirt eliminates the bulk by combining a stylish collar with a comfortable, stretchy knit body. It is shapewear and a shirt all in one that gives you the look of a collared shirt without the bunchiness and bulk. The body is a stretchy knit that smooths and shapes - it's 90% nylon and 10% spandex. The upper and collar is a fine cotton poplin made of 97% cotton and 3% spandex.

If you like the idea of layering your looks but don't like the squirming and contorting that comes with it, then you have to check out this shirt. Below I put five looks together using a few of the styles SkinnyShirt offers to show how you can easily breathe new life into your wardrobe without losing your breath.

Layered looks using the SkinnyShirt

SkinnyShirt Outfit #1

Using SkinnyShirty's Collar + Tails Red Plaid top I created this casual look. I layered a classic v-neck sweater in navy from J. Crew over the top and styled the look with boyfriend jeans and lace up booties. I finished the outfit with a navy hat from Modcloth, an ivory blanket scarf, leather bracelet and cognac bag from Jessica Simpson.

With slim sweaters that will easily show every shirt bump, a shirt like this will eliminate that problem.

SkinnyShirt Outfit #2

Cropped sweaters, like this style from Alice + Olivia, are much more wearable when you layer something underneath them. SkinnyShirt's Longsleeve + Tails in white is long enough to work perfectly. Paired with cigarette trousers and oxfords the outfit is chic and simple. Finishing the look, I added these black jet earrings from Banana Republic, bangles from LOFT and handbag from Vince Camuto.

SkinnyShirt Outfit #3

I used SkinnyShirt's Classic Sleeveless Chambray to change up this classic work look. You can wear these tops with cardigans, if you don't plan on unbuttoning them. I layered this navy Boss Hugo Boss cardigan over the SkinnyShirt and belted the look with a leopard belt. With the grey pencil skirt, this outfit is off to the office. I finished the ensemble with a pair of red pumps from Ivanka Trump and bag from Milly.

Outfit #4

If you're not interested in shirt tails and, instead, just want to add a collar, the Classic Sleeveless in white can be added to whatever sweater you are wearing. Here, I added it to a grey tunic from Ann Taylor that I styled with grey leggings from Boden, suede boots from Marc Fisher, a plum handbag and pendant from Gerard Yosca.

SkinnyShirt Outfit #5

The SkinnyShirt doesn't have to be used to give an outfit a collared look. You can use their Tank + Tails under a sweater to add a little length. This can be particularly helpful for times where you want to add a little butt coverage when wearing skinny pants or leggings or just like the idea of your a top peeking out from under your sweater.

In this outfit, I layered the tank under a green cable sweater from Modcloth and skinny cords from J. Crew. The outfit is finished in a casual weekend way with heeled booties from Louise et Cie, a printed scarf from LOFT, hoop earrings from Macy's and bag from Rebecca Minkoff.

If you have looking for easy way to layer your looks without the fuss or discomfort, the SkinnyShirt is definitely worth trying out. They even make pregnancy top styles.
