Six Courses for the Life-Long Learner of Reading and Writing

By Anovelsource @thenovellife

In my quest to improve life, business and self, I come across so many wonderful sites ~ some are bookish, some life-changing, and some just down-right hilarious.  I hope you’ll enjoy this new feature of The Novel Life and share a few of your own personal favorites from the week.  Feel free to grab the button, write a post including 3-4 of your favorite sites and/or posts from the week and leave the link in the comments.  Enjoy!

I admit it ~ I’m an addict when it comes to continuing education. . .especially the kind I can do on my computer for free!  Or, as I just discovered, using one of my audible credits that I used to have  plethora of. . .now I’m down to 0 but learning all kinds of stuff!  Allow me to share a few of my favorites

Canvas Network ~ Currently I’m taking the Stunt Writing for Personal Growth course for 5 weeks taught by a well-known Memoir Class Instructor through Writer’s Digest.  I’m also signed up and so psyched about Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMCs The Walking Dead.  This class is taught by 3 professors from UCIrvine and begins on October 14th.  And did I mention, these courses are FREE!

Coursera.org ~ The courses offered here range from statistics, math, and history to art, teacher development, English and everything in between.  I just finished a Social Psychology course taught by Scott Pious of Wesleyan University.  It was the best course I’ve taken on Coursera ~ completely interactive and informative!  And again, these courses are FREE!

The Great Courses ~ This one has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years and now that I can stream the courses through Audible I’m even more excited!  I had three credits available on Audible and just happened to come across The Great Courses for Audible ~ you could have heard me a mile away WooHoo-ing!  Of course I used all three credits immediately and downloaded The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World’s Great Intellectual Traditions taught by Professor Jay L. Garfield of Smith College and Confucius, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad taught by Professor Mark W. Muesse of Rhodes College and lastly, Books That Have Made History taught by Professor J. Rufus Fears of the University of Oklahoma.  These courses are NOT free; however the price is minimal when you compare the quality.  I was able to use a credit each for the courses above on Audible but those did not come with the typical bibliography and outline as when I buy directly from The Great Courses site.  At The Great Courses site the classes range from $19 – 99 and there are specials going on all the time.

Have you taken any MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) or purchased any of The Great Courses?  The social psychology course I just finished had over 250,000 students from all over the world! It was fantastic!  I’d love to hear about your experience with online courses ~ do share!
