Assisted by the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom and the Epic Games development studio in California, Singapore has set a $3.6 million innovation fund for virtual production.

An SGD5 million ($3.6 million) Virtual Production Innovation Fund is being established by Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

The fund was launched on Wednesday by Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, Tan Keat How, at the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) and Screen Singapore. Its goal is to provide regional media organizations with the expertise necessary to make effective use of virtual production tools. LED panels are utilized to create photorealistic environments for TV and film productions using gaming engines. Actors and visual effects can be captured in their natural environment. The production would no longer care about the site, road closures, location fees, and approvals, weather, set construction, or location leasing.

IMDA will use a two-pronged approach to teaching these abilities. In the first place, we’ve teamed up with our counterparts at the UK’s National Film and Television School (NFTS) to tailor the NFTS’s Certificate in Virtual Production program to the specific requirements of the Singaporean market. Fifteen Singaporean media educators, trainers, and industry veterans will spend the period between December 2022 and April 2023 receiving instruction from NFTS faculty and gaining access to the school’s virtual production facilities and virtual lectures.

The Singaporean business Aux Media, which creates such immersive experiences, also has a presence at ATF to demonstrate the value that virtual production can contribute to imaginative storytelling. The best methods to leverage various narrative styles, as well as best practices for virtual production workflows, will be shown by guest speakers from virtual production businesses including XON Studios, ROE Innovative Display, and Disguise.

The second stage will involve actual manufacturing and the cultivation of Singaporean talent and businesses. With the support of IMDA, local companies may employ virtual production to develop music videos, short films, and brand advertisements that are true to their vision. To make your usage of it simpler and more efficient. Companies have until February 15 to submit their proposals for new materials, and IMDA will cover up to 50% of the cost of the selected projects.

To begin the industry competition in the first quarter of 2023, the IMDA is collaborating with Epic Games, developer of the real-time 3D creative tool Unreal Engine. By holding a competition like this, we hope to get more companies to try out and commit to using Unreal Engine for virtual production. Successful teams will get funding from an IMDA prize plus mentoring and training from EPIC to implement their ideas into content creation.

Assistant Chief Executive (Media, Innovation, Communications, and Marketing) at IMDA Justin Ang recently remarked, “The development of virtual production technology in recent years now allows us to create visual effects in real-time without physical set production and with this, overcome the limits of space, scale, and complexity. The impossible can only be made possible by the imagination of our filmmakers. We look forward to more innovative ideas arising from the use of virtual production to strengthen Singapore’s position as a hub of content and IP creation. And looking forward to seeing more compelling stories.”

Speaking about Singapore, Epic Games’ Evangelist and Senior Technical Account Manager Dean Reinhardt stated, “Despite its size, Singapore has an abundance of incredible creative talent, and tools like Unreal Engine are essential to helping filmmakers and production studios thrive today. Let us reimagine storytelling and create stunning imagery in real-time. We are partnering with IMDA to help train and support these local talents to maximize their use of these incredibly powerful tools and the resources available to them. Excited to work with.”
