Have you ever had to deal with that stubborn skin condition of the scalp called dandruff? It is one of the most common skin afflictions experienced by people all over the world. Characterized by whitish skin flakes falling off your scalp and an irresistible itching, dandruff can be rather frustrating and embarrassing, particularly in a social situation. If you currently have this condition, you must find a way to get rid of it as soon as possible to avoid any more discomfort and awkwardness.

Following are a few simple tips for dandruff

  • Proper nutrition is the key-Although the exact causes of this condition are not known as yet, it is believed to be partly caused by a fungus known as malassezia. In order for this fungus to survive and thrive, it requires an acidic environment that is full of fat, starch, sugar, etc. The best way to prevent this fungus and thus prevent dandruff is to consume a healthy diet. When you eat nutritious food including fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, etc. you create an environment in your body that is more alkaline. This naturally improves the pH of your skin reducing any fungal infections and dandruff.
  • Curb those hair-care products-Excessive use of some hair care products including shampoos, hairsprays, gels, etc. are responsible for dandruff in some people. These artificial products cause excessive dryness of the skin of your scalp, causing flaking and itchiness. Some people are allergic to certain products which may further damage your hair and the underlying skin. Be careful while using a new hair-care product. If your dandruff problem has started soon after using it, the product could be the prime culprit. A natural or herbal hair-care solution such as the gels or sprays made of tea tree oil may offer better results.
  • Follow proper hygiene-One of the causes behind any kind of skin infections is poor hygiene. It is important that you wash your hair regularly, particularly so if you have dandruff. It cleans the scalp and removes any excess sweat, oiliness or dirt that might have accumulated on it. Gently massaging the scalp with a herbal shampoo or lotion while bathing and pouring warm and cold water alternately on the scalp has a stimulating effect on the blood capillaries under the skin of the scalp. This increases the flow of blood in that region and keeps the skin healthy and free of infections and dandruff.
  • Live a stress-free life-Many bodily conditions are a result of an excessive amount of stress in your life. Excess stress can suppress your body’s natural immune system and cause many infections and diseases to flourish. It is therefore important to learn to calm the mind and live a relaxed, happy and peaceful life as far as possible. Meditation, yoga, progressive relaxation and many other forms of healing systems and methods can be useful to achieve a more balanced state of mind. Not only will it make your life more relaxed, positive and creative but it will keep many physical conditions, including dandruff at bay.
