Simogo Explains Lorelei and the Laser Eyes: A Mind-Bending Puzzle Adventure

Swedish studio Simogo introduces its ninth major game – Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. The studio is known for games like Device 6, Year Walk, and Sayonara Wild Hearts – all critically acclaimed titles. Let’s face it, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is complicated, absurd, and intentionally confusing. It is a third-person puzzle adventure set in a surreal memory of a house. That sound weird enough? There’s a lot more.

The gameplay on this is non-linear. It intrigues and challenges your perceptions. If you are expecting minute details, we haven’t got any to offer at this point. However, Simon Flesser, the co-founder of Simogo has shared enough insights to get the hype going for a 2024 release on PC and Switch.

The early teaser released in June 2022 showed a bit of the world of Laser Eyes, not enough to understand what the game is really about. All we saw was an atmosphere that reeked of noir influences. The protagonist has glowing red eyes. They’re navigating a monochromatic estate.

Here’s what Flesser had to say about the game, “The project has been transformative to make, which reflects in its themes.” He added “It’s not a singular concept, it’s rather more of a collection of ideas over a long time. Thematically, there are a lot of ideas about stories within stories, stories reflecting each other, memories, dreams and parallel events and worlds.”

Giving further insight into the concepts underlying the game, Flesser added, “We’re trying to instill a feeling of things not being what they seem.” The players will feel “not dread, but a constant feeling of ambivalence, a story in which there is no good or evil. And a sense of absurdity — finding yourself in a strange situation in which you will eventually start questioning what is happening and what is not.”

Players will interact with a lot of objects like cameras, locks, keys, among other things as they go about solving 150+ puzzles. The studio is known for its desire and ability to mess with the players’ heads and this game seems to have been built with similar intentions.
