On October 26, 2026, Shopify moved its Knowledge base into the admin. It is the set of store facts that AI agents use to answer shopper questions about things like returns, shipping, contact details and gift services. You now review and publish those facts at Sales channels > Agentic. The standalone Knowledge Base app ends on January 15, 2027. If you used that app and had more than 1,000 facts, your facts did not move over, and you have to add back the ones you want before that date. Everyone else should still spend 20 minutes checking what AI agents will say about their store.
Here is what changed, who has to act, and a short audit you can run this week.
What Shopify changed on October 26
Shopify’s Changelog entry, dated October 26, 2026, says Knowledge base is now built into the admin and “replaces the standalone Knowledge Base app, which will no longer be available after January 15, 2027.” The Help Center page adds that the app can no longer be installed from the Shopify App Store.
The new page is one place to review, edit and publish the facts AI agents use about your store. According to Shopify:
- Shopify drafts the facts for you. It scans your public storefront regularly and combines what it finds with relevant admin data. Each fact links to its source page.
- Scanned facts stay unpublished until you publish them. The Changelog puts it plainly: “Nothing Shopify drafted reaches AI agents until you publish it.”
- Some facts publish automatically. The Help Center says facts linked to your admin, such as store policies and contact details, are published when Shopify creates them. That exception is easy to miss.
- Shopify will not change content without approval. When a new scan finds different information, it shows up as a suggested update that you approve or reject.
The Help Center describes the published knowledge base as the source of truth for non-product questions, and says AI channels that use it include Shop and third-party platforms. The agentic storefronts home page lists ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta surfaces such as Muse, Shop, and an “Other channels” group. We covered how those channels can sell your products in our article on Shopify Shop MCP and AI agents.
Who has to do something, and by when
The action depends on whether you used the old app and how many facts you had in it.
Used the Knowledge Base app, 1,000 facts or fewer Facts and overrides you wrote moved over and were published Review them. Unpublish anything stale or wrong No hard deadline, but check before holiday traffic
Used the app, more than 1,000 facts Facts did not move. Shopify says it emailed these stores Add back the facts and overrides you want to keep, within the 1,000-fact limit January 15, 2027
Never used the app Shopify drafted facts from your storefront Review drafts and publish the accurate ones. Check the policy and contact facts that publish automatically No deadline
Password-protected store Storefront cannot be scanned Expect only admin data. Add facts manually if you need them No deadline
Custom storefront or Agentic plan Generated facts are not available Add facts yourself as additional facts No deadline
Compiled from the Shopify Changelog (October 26, 2026) and the Shopify Help Center Knowledge base page, both checked October 27, 2026.Two small wording differences between Shopify’s pages are worth knowing. The Changelog says stores “with fewer than 1,000 facts” were migrated, while the Help Center says 1,000 or fewer. And the Changelog describes the limit as “up to 1,000 additional facts”, while the Help Center says 1,000 facts in total, including generated and additional facts. If your app had around 1,000 facts, open the new page and confirm what arrived, and plan as if the stricter total limit applies.
Why this matters more than it looks
When a shopper asks an AI assistant “Does this store ship to Canada?” or “Can I return a sale item?”, the agent needs an answer. Shopify is giving you a direct say in what that answer is. If you leave the drafts untouched, agents may have less to work with. If you publish without reading, you may publish something out of date.
Three practical risks are worth checking:
- Old pages become facts. Shopify drafts from your public storefront. An old FAQ page with last year’s return window or a discontinued gift wrap service can turn into a draft fact. The Help Center also warns that scans “don’t always catch storefront changes”, so important updates should be edited directly.
- Policies publish without a review step. Because admin-linked facts such as policies publish when created, the quality of your refund, shipping and privacy policy text in Shopify settings now shapes what agents say. If those policies are thin or missing, the page shows notices for missing ones.
- Agent answers become customer promises. If an agent tells a shopper you accept returns for 60 days because a draft said so, expect that shopper to hold you to it. We looked at the dispute side of agent orders in Shopify let AI agents check out. You eat the dispute.
A 20-minute Knowledge base audit
This is our suggested order, based on the categories and controls in Shopify’s Help Center as of October 27, 2026. We have not tested the page in a live store.
- Open the page. Go to Sales channels > Agentic, then Knowledge base. The Help Center lists the full path as Sales channels > Agentic > Sources > Knowledge Base. You need to be the owner or have the Agentic or relevant app development permission.
- Check what is already published. Start with Company policies and Contact, since those can be live already. Compare them with your current policy pages.
- Read the high-risk categories first. Returns and warranty, Fulfillment and Payment are where a wrong answer costs money. Fix wording before you publish.
- Publish by field, not all at once. Shopify lets you publish or unpublish everything, a whole category or a single field. Field by field is slower but safer the first time.
- Add the facts shoppers ask about most. Use your support inbox. Add each as an additional fact. Shopify offers three types: Paragraph (the agent rephrases it), Yes/No, and Tags (a list of short values). If you need both an explanation and a list, Shopify says to create two separate facts.
- Switch key fields to Manual. If a fact should never change because of a page scan, set its source to Manual. Shopify notes this removes references from the previous source, while manual references stay.
- Request a rescan after big site changes. Shopify says a rescan can take up to 48 hours.
- App users with more than 1,000 facts: export or copy what you need from the old app now, decide which facts matter within the 1,000 limit, and re-add them well before January 15, 2027.

What we do not know yet
- Plan and country eligibility. Neither the Changelog post nor the Help Center page we checked lists plan or country limits for Knowledge base. Check your own admin.
- Character limits. The Help Center states a 1,000-fact limit but no character limit per fact.
- Effect on sales. Shopify does not publish data on whether a fuller knowledge base changes conversion from AI channels. Early evidence on AI shopping traffic is mixed, as we covered in does AI shopping traffic actually convert.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to do anything if I never installed the Knowledge Base app?
No action is required, according to Shopify. Scanned facts stay unpublished until you publish them. It is still worth checking the policy and contact facts, because Shopify publishes admin-linked facts automatically.
Will Shopify change my published facts without asking?
Shopify says no. New scan results appear as suggested updates that you approve or reject.
Can I take a fact back after publishing it?
Yes. You can unpublish everything, a category or a single field at any time.
Does this affect Canadian stores?
Shopify’s announcement does not mention a regional limit, and the Help Center page does not list country eligibility. If you see Sales channels > Agentic in your admin, check whether Knowledge base appears there.
Is the 1,000 limit per category?
No. The Help Center says the knowledge base holds up to 1,000 facts in total, including generated and additional facts. The Changelog phrases it as up to 1,000 additional facts, so the safe assumption is 1,000 in total.
The takeaway
This is a small admin change with a real deadline for a narrow group and a real opportunity for everyone else. If you had more than 1,000 facts in the old app, put January 15, 2027 in your calendar now. If you did not, open Knowledge base before the holiday rush, fix what Shopify drafted, and publish only what you would be happy to see an AI assistant repeat to a customer.
