Shiv Sagar, Janpath, New Delhi

By Rohit Dassani

Shiv Sagar dates back decades when it was started in Mumbai and slowly expanded to other cities like Bangalore, Kolkata and so on. The most recent addition is ofcourse New Delhi. Shiv Sagar opens its doors on Janpath just next to Sarvana Bhavan. The interior has been thought through to make sure natural light is abundant inside the store. The décor is modern and I absolutely love the high ceilings. The outlet also has upstairs seating for large groups and parties.

The most interesting thing about Shiv Sagar is the fact that you get to try street foods from Mumbai and Delhi at an affordable rate. The outlet also serves South Indian, North Indian and Chinese food. The outlet is completely vegetarian as all other Shiv Sagar’s. If you are tired of Haldiram’s and Bikanervala’s, this is the place to try! With modern décor and authentic food, Shiv Sagar always stands out.

As we made ourselves comfortable I just couldn’t wait to try something. We ordered the Vada Pav and the Banana Milkshake. The Vada Pav was heavenly with very subtle flavors. The chili was controlled to make sure we enjoyed the Vada Pav to its limits. The Pav are imported from Mumbai to make sure consistent taste is maintained. The Banana Shake was just perfect, not too sweet.

We then tried the Pav Bhaji. Well the Bhaji was extra creamy as it was mashed to perfection. The Pav were soaking in butter. Wow, nothing could be better! We then the fruit juice shooters just to sample the juices here which included Pineapple, Moshambi, Water Melon, Orange and so many more. The concept of Juice Shooters in Test Tubes was exciting. Loved the consistency of the juices presented.

The Sev Puri is one of their best sellers. The chili and sweet flavor on a Puri and topped with Sev is our answer to Canape’s. Next came the Chinese Bhel, another item that goes to almost all the tables.

The Mumbai Bhel Puri was delicious. The Bhel Puri didn’t have any colors added to it unlike other places. Just sweet and tangy at the same time. The Shiv Sagar Sandwich was melting in the mouth. It had veggies like Tomato and Cucumber with a layer of cheese and chutney. Loved it!

We also ordered the Chiku Shake. The Chiku Shake was fresh and remains an underrated item in our minds. But once tried I absolutely love Chiku Shake! The Chili Idly is one of the fusion items here. The taste is delicious and the South Indian and Chinese fusion speaks out for itself.

At last I want to try their Triple Schezwan Fried Rice. A unique dish made from different layers made from vegetable Manchurian, fried noodles and Schezwan Fried Rice. The most interesting part is the fact that the Manchurians are hidden and the once tried the flavors just blows your mind off.

For desserts we had the Rose and Pan Kulfi. The Rose Kulfi was made from natural Rose Petals. The taste was awesome! The Pan Kulfi is one of the my favorite and Shiv Sagar just impressed me with a fresh Pan Kulfi with chunks of Pan in it! How can you not love it?
